Social Media Conflict

Project Overview

It is increasingly clear that social media conflict among youth can lead to offline violence. However, little is known about how to prevent the sometimes violent consequences associated with social media conflict, or the strategies youth already use to de-escalate such interactions. In partnership with COMPASS Youth Collaborative, our study will provide insight for prevention by documenting both youths’ strategies for de-escalation, and by creating a measure that captures the experience of social media conflict. This knowledge will provide key steps forward in identifying the conditions that increase the likelihood of these interactions. The creation of this measure will support future research that will develop models for predicting when aggressive communication online leads to offline violence and will have clinical utility for screening youth at risk for offline violence.
